Dear Staples Teamsters;
Upon taking office in January, 2014 one of the first contracts I was assigned was the Staples agreement. It was thought that my 24 years of experience with UPS would be a natural fit with the work you do at Staples.
When I reviewed your new agreement I found numerous glaring errors and omissions.
- The new language restricting outside contractors was never put in
- The language protecting our rights should there be a sale of operations is missing
- Union security, a mandatory article required by the IBT is gone along with several other paragraphs from Article 2
- Several paragraphs concerning wages and premium pay are gone
- Perfect attendance was left out
- The language that specifies how much vacation you receive each year is missing.
- Substantial language concerning your healthcare is missing, including part-time, retiree, log-term disability and coverage for laid-off employees
- The new language concerning your pension and retirement is not included
All of the missing language is the result of your previous Business Agent Kevin McIntosh not doing his job. He allowed the Company to finalize the current agreement and he signed it without reviewing it. In fact, he never gave a copy to your Union Steward for review.
Because of his gross negligence, the agreement you have worked so hard for has been decimated. I have asked our attorney to reach out to Staples in the hopes they will agree to sit down and reinsert all of the missing language that Mr. McIntosh left out.
It is my hope that I will be successful in convincing the Company to stand by their original agreement and help me fix the errors and omissions made by Mr. McIntosh. Should Staples refuse, I will explore additional options.
This is an unfortunate situation but in the interest of full disclosure I wanted to make all of you aware of it. As I get more details, I will keep you informed.
Fraternally yours,
XXXX XXXXXXX
