Christopher Toole to Teamsters for Wayne County Deputy Police Officers
February 21 at 7:18 PM
In my 17 years as an Officer with Teamsters Local 118, today was one of the biggest disappointments of my career.
The Teamsters/Wayne County Deputy Sheriff's Negotiation Committee was prepared to meet today and come to an agreement that would finally settle a contract that has been open since December, 2015.
At every turn, the Teamsters have worked towards coming to a settlement that would provide our members with a fair economic package and provide the County with the tools needed to safely protect the citizens of Wayne County.
At every turn, our movements and agreements were rejected.
The Union has held that our members should be paid equally with their counterparts in the Town of Newark. Sheriff Virts and County Board Member Verkey agreed…publicly and on the record. THE COUNTY REJECTED THIS PROPOSAL
The COUNTY requested the Union look at averaging seven surrounding counties and local police departments...departments the County picked. The Union agreed and provided appropriate wage rates based on their request. THE COUNTY REJECTED THIS PROPOSAL
The Union averaged the wages of Town of Newark (one of the highest wages after Monroe and Ontario County) and the Cayuga County (the lowest wages) and proposed this as a wage package. THE COUNTY REJECTED THIS PROPOSAL
An offer of two years of wage increases for 2016 and 2017 was floated to the Union. The Union agreed to this proposal. THE COUNTY RETRACTED THIS PROPOSAL AND WANTED FOUR YEARS ALONG WITH A MAJOR CHANGE IN THE CONTRACT
The County asked the Union to try and provide an economic proposal that was close to 3% for 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. The Union agreed and came back with an average increase of 3.08%. THE COUNTY REJECTED THIS OFFER.
My opinion today is no different that it was when the County’s lawyer walked out of the room on day 3 of negotiations after 15 minutes. THEY HAVE NO INTENTION OF NEGOTIATING WITH THE TEAMSTERS.
Who is in charge at Wayne County when it comes to the welfare of the Deputies? Rick House? Barry Virts? John Corcoran? Which super ego is keeping us from getting a fair agreement?
How does the County reconcile Virts’ and Verkey’s statements that their Deputies should be paid equal to other police departments in the Wayne County area? And remember, they didn’t say they should get the same percentage wage increase as Newark…they said their Deputies should be paid THE SAME as Newark Police Officers.
How does Wayne County tell their employees they are fighting for them yet remain willing to force them to accept sub-standard wages for their own personal gain…or wins. Because honestly, it isn’t about saying “I never lose”, it’s about being a leader and doing the right thing for the people you are responsible for.
Then the day is done, who wins? Not the ‘leaders’ of Wayne County… MAYBE YOU'RE THE THE PROBLEM TOOLE!!!
